McCowen family papers, 1861-1864.

ArchivalResource

McCowen family papers, 1861-1864.

The collection consists of five letters, a poem and a newspaper obituary of Benjamin B. McCowen. The letters are from Benjamin, Duncan, and E.C. to their family in Monroe County, Georgia. An 1861 letter from Benjamin in Warrington, Florida mentions the fortifications at Fort Pickens, and an 1862 letter from Duncan in Richmond to his sister Lizzie gives the details of her husband's death. The poem written by E.A. Whiteside to her husband, (possibly James A. Whiteside of the 12th regiment, Company E), and her 1864 letter describes the war news she is getting from newspapers and her opinions of General Johnston and General Hood.
